When trying to decide which thread to use it is important to consider what it is made from, and how thick it is. The different types of thread outlined below are suitable for various applications. Thicker threads are generally more durable but also alter the appearance of the seam. It is important to consider the material, application, and aesthetics when making the choice of which thread to use.
We stock a variety of threads and have written this quick guide to give an overview of the different types we have available:
A 100% polyester, general purpose thread. Spun polyester threads are commonly used for sewing garments and are a good all-round thread for light-midweight fabrics. They look, feel and sew like cotton, but are more durable. This type of thread is also great value, which makes it arguably our most popular variety!
Note: For most threads, the lower the count number, the thicker the thread.
Polyester corespun
A strong thread with a polyester filament core and polyester fibre wrap. It is colourfast and has a high tensile strength. It is often used for clothing items such as shirts, as well as workwear and leatherwear.
Bulk textured polyester
A thread with textured filaments which give a soft feel. It is ideal for overlocking and cover seaming. It makes soft and comfortable next-to-skin seams. For this reason, it is frequently used for applications such as swimwear and children’s clothing.
A durable thread made from high-tensity continuous filament nylon. It is particularly good for high-speed sewing and has a high tensile strength. One of the reasons why it is so popular is its abrasion resistance and weatherproof qualities. This means it is used for applications such as footwear, leather goods, upholstery, luggage, and mountaineering equipment.
Colours
There are 55 shades available to order, which allows you to colour match to your fabric! This reference guide will give you a general idea of the available colours by type. Please note that computer screens vary and therefore colour representation isn’t always accurate. You can request one of these sample books for the most precise way to match the thread to your material before placing an order.
Glace
A cotton-wrapped polyester corespun thread with a lustrous glace finish. The cotton wrap protects the core from high-speed needle heat and the glace finish gives a smoother surface. It is used for saddlery, automotive, luggage & travel goods, upholstery, outdoor goods & sports equipment.
A single filament thread made from 6.6 nylon, which is sometimes known as “invisible nylon”. It offers excellent strength and abrasion resistance in relation to its fine size. Monofilament is popular because its transparency helps it to blend into all fabric colours and it is soft, strong, and resistant to high temperatures. This makes it ideal for hem and waistband stitching, vertical blinds, blind stitching, quilting, ladieswear and menswear.
Note: Unlike with other threads, the larger the count number, the thicker (higher denier) the thread.
A heavy duty spun polyester thread used in bag stitcher machines. It is suitable for sealing bags made from all materials these machines are used with. This includes PVC, jute, and polypropylene, as well as woven bags and sacks. It is durable and designed to be robust and safe across these applications, sealing bags of everything from flour to fertilizer! We have this thread available in white, black, red, and blue.
